Policy Brief Series Overview

The fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed 500 million people into global poverty since March – and more than 8 million of them are Americans. The economic shock is exposing the systemic disparities of our financial and economic system, and threatens progress towards an equitable 21st century. Leading policy thinkers blame a wide range of issues for allowing these vulnerabilities to persist, but one truth endures: the economy of the 20th century has not been working for all, leaving many sitting on the outside looking in. These towering problems demand a new age of problem-solving and we need to ensure that everyone has a seat at the table for the discussion. It is time to think dynamically and bring in stakeholders who have historically been left out of the conversation: social enterprise, BIPOC entrepreneurs, small businesses, independent businesses, and womxn and minority-owned businesses/founders.

This Policy Brief Series aims to provide short, policy-relevant briefings on issues of public interest as it relates to race equity, social impact, and entrepreneurship in Minnesota. The series supports efforts to create awareness and understanding of current policies and legislation happening locally, that impacts entrepreneurs and small business owners. Each policy will be analysed through a lens of race equity and social impact — providing understanding of how each policy plays a role in creating a more inclusive entrepreneurship and social enterprise ecosystem.

Each consecutive session aims to dive deeper into two policies discussing barriers, challenges, and opportunities around each policy and its effects on entrepreneurs of color, womxn, and social enterprises.

Roundtables

The conversation will take place over three public roundtable events during April and May of 2021, each with a different focus: the first will dive into how to understand the social economy through the lens of current policies, while the second and third will each center on reviewing specific policies .

All are welcome to the table as SISG and SE MSP seek to make policy more accessible and relevant to broader audiences, including policymakers, the media, civil society groups and the general public.

On a fundamental level, we want to start a conversation and build awareness around how the Minnesota economy can, and should, better serve all citizens. But the critical time is now – please join us in driving a new economy
